5 Things you should know about Applying for a Temporary Residence Visa in South Africa

South Africa stands as a captivating and culturally diverse nation, offering distinctive opportunities and unparalleled experiences to all. Yet, for those aspiring to visit, settle, work, study, or reunite with relatives or partners within its borders, a pivotal step involves applying for a South African visa. It’s imperative to understand that the type of visa required hinges on one’s nationality and the underlying purpose of the visit to South Africa.

MAIN CATEGORIES OF TEMPORARY RESIDENCE

Outlined below is a comprehensive listing of temporary residency visa categories, alongside their respective validity periods:

  • Temporary business visas: Issued for periods extending up to three years.
  • Temporary work visas: Aligned with fixed-term contracts, these visas can be endorsed for a span of up to five years.
  • Temporary retired persons visas: Rooted in the financial profile of the potential immigrant, these visas retain validity for a maximum of four years.
  • Temporary study visas: Aligned with the course duration, these visas are typically granted for the duration of the study program.
  • Temporary spouse/life partner visas: Validity stretches from two to three years, contingent upon the applicant’s employment status.
  • Temporary relative visas: Granted for a duration ranging from two to four years.
  • Temporary volunteer or research visas: Endorsed for a timeframe of up to three years.

WHERE TO SUBMIT A SOUTH AFRICAN VISA APPLICATION

Where you submit your application will depend on what category you are applying for, and whether this is a first application or renewal. The Immigration Act is clear in its direction that unless you are the child or spouse of a South African citizen or Permanent Resident, or unless you require urgent medical attention, you cannot change your status from a visitor’s, or tourist visa to any other category. You would therefore have to submit this application from the South African mission abroad.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR SOUTH AFRICAN VISA

Enclosed within the DHA-1738 temporary residence visa application form, a comprehensive rundown of the requisite supporting documents for each category of temporary residence visa is provided. To ensure the smooth processing of their applications, aspirants are mandated to furnish all essential supporting documentation. The basic documents required are:

  1. Copy of passport
  2. Medical report
  3. Police clearance report(s)
  4. Proof of finances
  5. Proof of where you will reside in South Africa
  6. Special supporting documents relevant to your category

RENEWAL AND CHANGES TO YOUR TEMPORARY RESIDENCE VISA

Renewing a temporary visa is often a straightforward process. However, the specifics may vary based on the current type of temporary visa held. Applying for a change in the conditions of your existing visa, however, can be a more intricate undertaking. Seeking legal counsel is advisable in such instances. An added point to consider is the current processing times for temporary residence visas – at the time of this post, renewals and changes of condition are taking upward of 9 months to process. We therefore suggest that you start the process earlier than you’d have planned.

It is recommended to file applications for renewal or change of condition no later than 60 days before the expiration of the present visa. Given the current processing times, submitting applications 4-6 months before the visa’s expiration is prudent.
